Veterans agency gives out shoes to first responders

Sheriff's Deputy Breena Williams shows off a pair of sneakers.

Veterans Services of the Carolinas, a division of Asheville Buncombe Christian Community Ministry, teamed up with the Salvation Army to give away hundreds of pairs of shoes to essential workers and first responders on Friday.

“Operation Gratitude is just a small way to show appreciation and thanks to all those teachers, first responders, law enforcement officers and essential workers who served on the front lines during the pandemic,” said Brandon Wilson, managing director for Veterans Services of the Carolina. All Veterans Services of the Carolina ask in return was a handwritten note of thanks or encouragement to a veteran.

"It was an absolute honor to take a moment and write a personal note to a veteran who has served our country and given so much for our freedom, and for that we are truly grateful," Sheriff Lowell Griffin said.
