Claudette packs 1-2 inches of rain; NWS issues flood warning

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the area for a 24-hour period starting at 8 o'clock Saturday night as tropical storm Claudette churned northeast from Alabama.

The tropical storm will bring bands of heavy rainfall as it enters North Carolina especially along the southern Blue Ridge escarpment region, the NWS said. Prolonged periods of heavy could produce flash floods.

The forecast called for a 30 percent chance of rain Saturday night, increasing to 80 percent on Sunday and 60 percent Sunday night, with 1-2 inches accumulation possible. The system should clear out by Monday, which will be mostly sunny, according to the weather service.  A chance of showers returns Tuesday while Wednesday is forecast to be sunny with a high of 78.
