Ph.D. candidate wins Trout Unlimited scholarship

A Ph.D. candidate at the University of Georgia has been named the 2021 recipient of the Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited William L. Arbuckle Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

The award is provided through a scholarship fund of the Community Foundation of Henderson County and was established in 2006 by Bonnie Arbuckle and the Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited to honor the memory of William “Bill” L. Arbuckle, an avid angler, supporter and former director of the Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited who devoted his time, talent and resources to the success of the chapter.
The 2021 recipient, Bryan Bozeman, has spent the last decade completely immersed in the scientific fields of fisheries and wildlife, aquaculture, and freshwater biodiversity through his undergraduate education at the University of Tennessee and his ongoing graduate education at the University of Georgia.
Through his training and education, Bozeman applies his knowledge of streams, rivers, and their ecosystems to furthering their preservation.

“Natural resources in Southern Appalachia, specifically our streams, rivers, and their ecosystems, are amongst our most valuable assets monetarily, socially, functionally, and intrinsically,” Bozeman said. “Unfortunately, these resources and ecosystems also are amongst our most threatened assets. As a conservation scientist, I hope to spend my career designing, implementing, and improving freshwater conservation in Southern Appalachia.”
After completing his doctorate, Bozeman plans to spend his career working with and for the people of Southern Appalachia to protect the remarkable freshwater resources and biodiversity.

“My childhood experiences of snorkeling and swimming and fishing in Southern Appalachian streams and rivers instilled in me a deep appreciation of these resources," he said. "My personal and professional goal is to give others the opportunity to share these formative experiences so that they might also strive to protect the streams, rivers, and fish of Southern Appalachia.”
The $1,000 Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited William L. Arbuckle Memorial Scholarship opportunity is offered for any student accepted to an accredited degree granting college or university within the Southern Appalachian Region. Recipients must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the field of fisheries and wildlife, aquaculture, freshwater biology, or other related fields. This scholarship is open to students pursuing community college, college or university degrees in the fields related above. Applications are typically accepted each spring and are posted on Community Foundation’s website at www.cfhcforever.org.
