Street Dance, Music on Main open for season this week

Hendersonville's summer live outdoor music scene kicks off next week with the Monday night Street Dance followed by Friday night's Music on Main, both from 7 to 9 p.m.

The first Street Dance will feature Blue Ridge Tradition, a five-piece bluegrass band that plays a mix of traditional bluegrass, original songs, crossover material and dance tunes. The evening will also include group square dancing, led by caller (and local legend) Walt Puckett, who has been calling dances for more than 50 years. Walt will make sure you learn the moves, people of all ages are encouraged to participate in this local tradition.

The Street Dance traces its history to 1918, when the WWI soldiers began coming home and Hendersonville’s people came out in droves to celebrate. Music and dance ensued, and the Street Dance was born. The Street Dances of recent years encourages people to come and dance to the traditional bluegrass music while learning and taking part in the historic culture of Hendersonville and the Southern Appalachian region.

Monday evening concerts alternate each week with between the Street Dance and Monday Night Live! Concerts, while every Friday evening is Music On Main, with the exception of the week of July 4.

Friday evening’s Music on Main at the Visitor Center stage will feature Rock and Roll Reunion playing classic rock, beach and blues, with Tom Crabtree on guitar, Sony Stokes on bass, Andre Kerr on keyboards and saxophone, Fred Miller on keyboards and guitar, and Bob Tauber on drums.

Classic car shows are held in conjunction with Music on Main every Friday. The car shows are located on South Main Street from Caswell Street to First Avenue, which will be closed to thru-traffic. The HCTDA hosts free concerts every Monday and Friday evening through August 19, 2022. Each week, bring a chair, relax, and sit back to enjoy some music. Dancing, singing along, and toe tapping are encouraged; however, early admission, alcoholic beverages, backpacks and coolers are prohibited.

In case of inclement weather, concerts will be postponed until 8 p.m. If the weather does not improve by 8, performances will be cancelled.
