Sheriff's office corrects earlier report of shots fired at deputies

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office on Friday amended an earlier news release that said a man fired at deputies before they returned fire, wounding him. In the new statement, the sheriff's office said it had erroneously reported that the suspect, Jeromy Swaringen, fired on deputies during their response to the call in the Clear Creek community.

"However, upon the arrival of deputies, Swaringen was in possession of a weapon," the department said Friday. "Swaringen refused to obey commands to drop the weapon and, upon pointing the weapon in their direction, Swaringen was shot by the deputies. Swaringen sustained non-life-threatening injuries."

The SBI is continuing its investigation, the results of which will be turned over to District Attorney Andrew Murray for review. The district attorney may release additional information when the review is complete, the sheriff's office said.

"We always attempt to reveal information concerning major events to the public as soon as possible," Friday's news release said. "However, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office wants to apologize for the incorrect information that was first reported and thank the public for their continued patience while the case is investigated."
