11th Congressional District campaign cash tops $3.5 million

The race for the 11th Congressional District seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn has topped $3.5 million in cash raised and $3 million in money spent.

Democrat Jasmine Beach-Ferrara raised $2.1 million, spent $1.83 million and had $282,000 remaining as of the Sept. 30 deadline for campaign spending reports, according to opensecrets.org. Chuck Edwards, the state senator from Flat Rock who ousted Cawthorn in the May 17 Republican primary, raised $1.4 million, spent $1.17 million and had $235,000 left. Libertarian David Coatney raised $18,190, spent $15,189 and had cash on hand of $3,001.

An ordained minister, LGBT activist and Buncombe County commissioner, Beach-Ferrara has a lot more small donors than Edwards. Her campaign reported $1,060,535 in contributions of $200 or less — 50.17 percent of the total — and PAC donations totaling $81,524.

Small donors made up just 2.7 percent of Edwards's total. Large contributions from individuals accounted for 57 percent of his total while PAC donations made up 17 percent of the amount the campaign raised. Edwards also gave his campaign $250,000. Beach-Ferrara reporting giving her campaign $1.
