Historic Johnson Farm

What do you do in your volunteer job?

I am one of 16 very dedicated gardeners at Historic Johnson Farm. My job
mainly consists of clearing brush, mulching and keeping the farm beautiful
for the people who visit the farm. I also volunteer for spring and fall
festivals and decorate the farmhouse for Christmas and the Candle Light
Christmas tours. I also serve on the Board of Directors as Vice Chairman.

How long have you been volunteering?

I have been volunteering at the farm for three years. I was a 1971 graduate of
West Henderson High School and have very fond memories of Leander and
Vernon Johnson.

Why do you volunteer?

As a retired teacher assistant of Henderson County Public Schools, there
were many fieldtrip visits for our classes. Historic Johnson Farm helps me
stay connected with the schools and their children.

What is the best thing about volunteering?

Volunteering has helped me learn more about the wonderful things
happening in our town and its history.

If someone is interested in volunteering, what advice would you give based
on your own experience?

One of my passions is working outdoors. Volunteering at the farm was one
of my first choices when I retired. My advice would be to follow your
passion when looking for the perfect place to help out.
