Highland Lake Road now closed to thru traffic

FLAT ROCK — Highland Lake Road closed to thru traffic starting Tuesday as work gets under way on the $10 million widening project. Although the NCDOT designated detour is to use Shepherd Street between Greenville and Spartanburg highways, West Blue Ridge Road and Brooklyn Avenue are also options.

The project, which has risen in cost to $9.971 million from an initial projection of $2.62 million, initially had a two-year timeline with an original completion date of March 15, 2024. The NCDOT extended the construction time by 177 days because of delays in obtaining materials. The village of Flat Rock also reports on its website that:

  • Property entrances on Highland Lake Road will remain accessible.
  • The current order of construction is to replace the Dye Creek and King Creek culverts before adding shoulders and curb and gutter on the north side.
  • Road closure can be a maximum total of 150 days.
  • Road construction will proceed from east to west (Spartanburg Highway to Greenville Highway).
