LOCAL BRIEFS: Camera Club exhibit, Women Farm Too!, take a hike

Camera Club exhibit is up through Friday

The Camera Club of Hendersonville is holding a two-week exhibition of member photographs at Kaplan Auditorium in the Henderson County Public Library through Friday, Oct. 13.

The photographs are the result of the Club’s annual print competition of almost 100 beautiful images depicting North Carolina scenery, wildlife, architecture and people. The public is invited to visit the exhibition and learn about the Camera Club. The Club, which has nearly 90 members and has been in existence for over 40 years, sponsors photography field trips, mentoring, and monthly photo reviews to help members improve their photography skills. Women Farm Too! is topic at AAU meeting

Women Farm Too! is the topic of a presentation hosted by AAUW at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Art Place, 2021 Asheville Highway.

Raspberry Fields and Minibatch Bakery owner Stacy Fields and Poppins Posies Flower Farm owner Judy McLean will share their stories of how they got started in farming, what it’s like to be a farmer today and what changes they foresee for agriculture in Henderson County. You’ll learn about the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, ASAP connections and the Double SNAP program. There’ll be some goodies from the Minibatch Bakery to taste, as well as a silent auction for products from both farms.

White Squirrel Hiking Challenge features hidden gems

The popular White Squirrel Hiking Challenge this year is made up of eight hikes featuring hidden gems away from the crowds, lovely waterfalls and mountain views, Conserving Carolina announced.

Hikers are invited to take part in hikes, all on lands that Conserving Carolina has helped protect, enhance or open to the public. This year's challenge includes a stunning new trail in the Hickory Nut Gorge, a waterfall in North Carolina’s newest state forest, the breathtaking World’s Edge cliffs in Chimney Rock State Park. Hikers who take the challenge will special land, including some that only opened to the public in the last few years. They will discover and connect on a deeper level with our natural world. They can also earn their White Squirrel Hiking Challenge 7 patch as a badge of honor and perks from Mast General Store. The eight hikes are:

  • DuPont Loop: Quarry and Rocky Bald
