Firefighters from Edneyville Fire and Rescue and other departments in Henderson County were working Friday night to contain a large brush fire in the Green Mountain Road area of Henderson County.
Emergency responders asked that people avoid the area to allow fire crews to operate without obstructions, according to information from Henderson County Sheriff’s Department.
Smoke from the fire billowed across the area Friday afternoon and evening.
By late Friday, flames from the fire could be seen from at least five miles away. One Edneyville resident said the fire “looked like a volcano” on the mountain.
The Facebook page for Edneyville Fire and Rescue on Friday night said crews were expected to remain on the scene throughout the night and were currently cutting a dozer line in off the top of Kyles Creek Road and Banks Mountain Road.
The post told residents that crews will begin starting back burns Saturday morning and that smoke may intensify.
“Any structure that seems threatened will have fire crews at the residence,” according to the Facebook post.
The post said the fire department did not expect to order evacuations Friday night.
