The Clay County Republican Party will host a debate on Saturday, Jan. 13, between U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards and challenger Christian Reagan.
The event begins at 1 p.m. at the Brasstown Community Civic Center, 255 Settawig Road, Brasstown. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Food and other concessions will be available for purchase.
“I am thrilled the 11th District Republican Congressional Primary debate has been finalized, and that it will be here in the far-western area of the District," said Barbara Deas, chair of the Clay County Republican Party. "This is an amazing opportunity for the voters in one of the strongest Republican areas of the 11th District, and I think it’s fitting that we host a primary debate as candidates fight for the support of conservative voters.”
The debate willl be moderated by Larry J. Ford, vice chair and general counsel of the Clay County GOP. Candidates could expect questions on the major economic, political and social issues facing the nation during 2024.
“The questions for the candidates are designed to give the voters an opportunity to gain in-depth insight into the candidates’ positions on important topics facing the country,” Ford said.
In a news release issued on Dec. 21, Edwards said the Brasstown event is the only debate he'll participate in before the March 5 primary.
“I’m excited to hold my single debate in this race in a far western county where my legislative schedule does not allow me to visit nearly as often as I’d like," he said. "The calendar in Washington, DC, leading up to the primary election, appears prohibitive for me to attend nearly 30 forums and debates as I did during the 2022 primary season. We have much unfinished work in DC, and I owe it to the citizens of NC-11 to be present as required."
