The North Carolina Board of Transportation made it official last week: The Four Seasons Boulevard span over I-26 will be named the Deputy Ryan P. Hendrix Bridge.
The board’s action on Thursday came after both the Hendersonville City Council and Henderson County Board of Commissioners adopted resolutions urging the state to honor Deputy Hendrix, who was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 10, 2020, at the age of 34.
The son of Heidi and Don Hendrix and a Henderson County native, Hendrix graduated from Hendersonville Christian School in 2004 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps the next year. Discharged from active duty as a lance corporal, he remained in the Marine Corps Reserves for five years and volunteered to serve a tour of duty in Iraq in 2006.
He joined the Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer in 2012 and rose through the ranks to become a patrol deputy. “Even in death, Hendrix continued to exemplify a servant’s heart, as an organ donor helping countless strangers,” the Board of Transportation resolution said.
