More than 5,000 remain without power after overnight thunderstorm

More than 5,000 Duke Energy customers remained without power Saturday evening after a violent thunderstorm roared through the county in the predawn hours earlier.

The utility's outage map showed 5,410 customers without electricity at 6 p.m. while Buncombe had 20,095 outages.

The thunderstorm, packing hail in parts of the county, became the second powerful storm to wrack Henderson County, threatening the apple crop throughout much of the Dana and Edneyville area.

The forecast Sunday called for a high near 83 with a 20 percent chance of precipitation, the National Weather Service said. Monday should be partly sunny with a high around 81 and a 40 percent chance of showers.
