Changes to city garbage, recycling, brush collection start this week

Hendersonville’s Public Works Department is making some updates to garbage, recycling and brush services starting this week.

Brush collection

As the city looks for ways to keep costs manageable and improve the efficiency of its operations, it will be making some changes to the free brush collection service. Starting in July, brush collection will be moving to a biweekly schedule. Brush and yard waste will be collected every other week.
Week of July 7 – No brush collection
Week of July 14 – Brush collection
Week of July 21 – No brush collection
Week of July 28 – Brush collection

Minimum brush pile size

To help crews operate efficiently, brush and yard waste will only be collected if it meets the minimum required volume: At least 1 full kraft paper yard waste bag (30-gallon bag) or a brush pile equivalent in size to 2x2x2 feet. Yard waste less than full kraft bag (or equivalent size) will not be collected until the size reaches or exceeds 1 full bag or a 2x2x2-foot pile.

Public works will provide residents up to 10 free kraft bags per year per household. Starting on Monday residents can visit the City Operations Center at 305 Williams Street 7 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays to pick up bags. Call 828-697-3084 when you reach the door and public works staff will assist you. The office will be closed on Friday for the Fourth of July.

Compost bin program

The city of Hendersonville offers compost bins at a discounted price for residents. Sixty-five-gallon compost bins can be purchased for $69. Instructions are posted on the website for scheduling pick-up. To order one go to rainwatersolutions.com/products/hendersonville.

There will be no garbage, recycling or brush collection on the Fourth of July holiday. Garbage and recycling for Friday customers will take place on Friday, July 11. Brush collection will resume on Friday, July 18.
