David Weintraub, executive director of the Center for Cultural Preservation, won the Tryon International Film Festival's Human Rights and Dignity Award for his recent black history documentary Color Beyond the Lines.
"David Weintraub's film 'hit the nail on the head' when it came to demonstrating what the black community faced in WNC and why the desegregation of schools never went far enough to empower the black community," said Samuel Waymon, award-winning composer and actor, brother of internationally renowned musician Nina Simone and one of the judges for the Tryon International Film Festival. "By shuttering black institutions like the Ninth Avenue School that was run by black educators for black students, we gained entry to the white schools but lost a beloved part of our community in the process. Black History is American history. The better we understand this history, the sooner we can all heal as a community."
Weintraub also announced that his 2023 documentary Nature's Wisdom Thru Native Eyes, focusing on the native view of environmental protection, will make its public television debut in November on PBSNC in North Carolina at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and 8 p.m. Nov. 21 on South Carolina's ETV.
