Church Street repaving under way

A contractor began repaving Church Street on Monday night, signaling that relief is on the way for motorists weary of the bone-jarring ride on the southbound one-way street.

Delayed last year by Hurricane Helene and this past summer by extended periods of rain, the project now has a completion date of Nov. 10. Cliffside, N.C.-based Site Development Corp. won a $1,374,354 contract for the job. Crews will work from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the project.

When the Lightning reported last month on the Hendersonville City Council's frustration with the delays, the NCDOT responded that the contractor had "performed exceptional work resurfacing Helene damaged roads across Western North Carolina" and had "not exceeded the allotted contract time to complete the Church Street resurfacing."
