Theatre troupe to stage ‘Godspell’ at Laurel Green

The cast of 'Godspell'

PilgrimQuests will present the musical “Godspell” next week under a tent at Laurel Green in Laurel Park.

The production, conceived by John-Michael Tebelak with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, is directed by retired priest Philip Wiehe. It features Joff Masukawa in the role of Jesus and Bud Murphy as John the Baptist and Judas, exploring themes of community, kindness and love through parables and the passion story of Jesus.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. May 20-22, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 24. Laurel Green is on Fifth Avenue West at White Pine Drive. Tickets range from $10 to $45 and are available here. The show runs approximately two hours with one intermission.

The park setting transforms the production into an immersive experience set in a physical therapy area of a senior living center. An intergenerational cast representing residents, caregivers and visitors incorporates props including an exercise bike, a walker and a Pilates ball.

“Bringing ‘Godspell’ to life in Laurel Park allows us to break the fourth wall in ways a traditional theater cannot,” Wiehe says. “This is a raw, immediate production designed specifically for this space and this moment.”
