TAKE A HIKE: Big changes in courthouse parking start this week

Now that construction is under way on the massive Grove Street Courthouse addition, visitors to the hall of justice will see major changes in parking and access — and also log a lot more steps.

The county has procured more parking to make up for the slots lost to the construction zone.

A new lot on Pine Street at Fourth Avenue East is now available for courthouse parking. The lower parking lot across Fourth Avenue closes this week.

“We want to assure folks that the upper lot will remain open while the lower lot is closed, and when we reopen the lower lot, then we’ll close the upper lot,” county Communications Director Mike Morgan said. The two lots "will never be closed at the same time.”

Another major change for courthouse visitors is the switch in the public entrance from the north side to the south side (next to the sheriff’s office). The current northside public entrance (and upper parking lot)  will close and new southside entrance will open on June 18. At that time, the lower parking lot will reopen.

The county also has secured additional parking at the Church of the Nazarene, on Washington Street and Second Avenue West, four blocks from the Grove Street Courthouse.

“As these plans take effect, please take a little bit extra time when you’re coming to the courthouse to park and to get into the building,” Morgan said.
