City to dedicate historic marker to Buffalo Soldier Walter Bryson

Born May 3, 1876, Walter Bryson served as a Buffalo Soldier in the U.S. Army.

The Hendersonville Historic Preservation Commission invites residents and visitors to attend the unveiling of a historic marker honoring Henderson County native and Buffalo Soldier Walter Bryson at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in the northern portion of Oakdale Cemetery.

Born in Henderson County in 1876, Bryson served in the U.S. Army as part of the Buffalo Soldiers, the African American regiments established after the Civil War. His story is part of the broader history of Henderson County and the many individuals who have contributed to the community’s history and heritage.

The marker unveiling will provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about Bryson’s life and military service, the history of the Buffalo Soldiers, and the significance of preserving and sharing these stories.

The marker-placement is part of the historic boar's Neighborhood History Project, which seeks to document and preserve the stories, photographs and landmarks that reflect the rich cultural and architectural heritage of the city’s neighborhoods.
