'Deathtrap' opens Thursday at Playhouse

Playhouse veteran Ralph Redpath appears in 'Deathtrap'

Deathtrap, which holds the record for the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway and received a Tony nomination for Best Play, opens Thursday at the Flat Rock Playhouse Mainstage.

Deathtrap is about Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers. His struggle to overcome a dry spell has left him with a string of failures and a shortage of money. A possible break in his fortunes comes when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college — a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit.
Sidney cooks up a plan offer collaboration to the student, an idea which the younger man quickly accepts. Suspense mounts steadily as Sidney's intentions are revealed and the plot begins to twist and turn with such an abundance of thrills and laughter that audiences will be enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play.
Directed by Don Stephenson and starring Michael MacCauley as Sidney Bruhl, the show also features Garrett Long (Myra Bruhl), Peggy J. Scott (Helga Ten Dorp), Jarid Faubel (Clifford Anderson) and Playhouse favorite Ralph Redpath (Porter Milgrim), a veteran of more than 100 Playhouse performances.
Performances are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $35. Box office: 828-693-0731 or 866-732-8008. Website: www.flatrockplayhouse.org.
