Henderson County is the top apple growing county in the state and one of the top producing counties in the U.S. Here are some apple facts:
• Henderson County produces more than 85 percent of the apple crop in North Carolina.
• The county has 5,700 acres in orchards and grows more than 4 million bushels.
• Apples grown in the county, in approximate order of ripening, include Honeycrisp, Gala, Jonagold, Golden Delicious, Mutsu and Crispin, Fuji, Rome, Cameo, Pink Lady.
• A full crop will generate approximately $30 million in income.
• Apples can be sold as juice, process (such as slicing) or table apples packed for retail sale in bags or trays.
• The county has eight pick-your-own orchards and 27 farm stands that offer fresh apples and everything from baked goods and ice cream to orchard tours and hayrides.
