GOP sets forums for local races

The Henderson County Republican Party plans a series of Thursday night campaign forums in April that it hopes will include all 15 Republican candidates on the primary ballot for local office.

The forums will be held starting at 7 p.m. April 3, 10 and 17 at the Opportunity House.

Here's the lineup:

  • April 3: Sheriff candidates Charlie McDonald, Michael Brown and Erik Summey.
  • April 10: Register of Deeds, Evona Johnson Kilpatrick, Shannon Baldwin and Lee King, 7-8 p.m.; N.C. House District 117, Chuck McGrady, Ronnie Edwards.
  • April 17: Board of Commissioners. District 1: J. Michael Edney, Andrew Riddle, Hogan Corn. District 3: William G. Lapsley, Larry R. Young. District 4: Tommy Thompson, Tim Griffin.
  • Republican Party Chairman Glen Englram said the forums will give candidates more time than the three minutes they might be offered at the party convention.

People who come to the forum will be able to submit questions in writing.

"That way we can eliminate duplication and cut down on the way lay people have of setting up their question with long speeches," Englram said.
