It's time to enter apple recipes

The annual Apple Recipe Contest at the North Carolina Apple Festival will be held on the festival's opening day at the First Citizens Plaza on Main Street.

Any interested cooks may enter the contest by submitting the Recipe Entry Form and written recipe to the Henderson County office of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service by Monday, Aug. 25. Categories are Gluten Free, Breads, Pies and Pastries, Desserts, Kids and Professional.

The recipes must be original and not copyrighted. The type of apple used should be identified in the recipe, which should contain at least two cups of apples or one cup of applesauce.

Contestants will bring their completed product to the First Citizens' Plaza on Friday, Aug. 29, between 8:30 and 9:30 a..m. Judging will begin at 10:30 am. Judges this year will include some familiar Western North Carolina and Henderson County faces.

First and second place winners will be announced in each of the categories, with a grand prize going to the best entry overall, around noon, after judging is complete.
