LOCAL BRIEFS: Tax Aide, trunk show, Tapestry center

Tax Aide program now open

Henderson County AARP Foundation Tax Aide Program, largest in the state of North Carolina, is now open at the Hendersonville Church of Christ; 1975 Haywood Road. Hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Mills River site this year is at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, 419 Turnpike Road. The site opens Feb. 9 and ends April 13. It is open by appointment only from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
For both sites, taxpayers will need to bring Social Security cards and picture identifications plus Social Security cards for dependents; a copy of last year’s tax return; all W-2s; all 1099 forms; other tax forms or information for both income and expenses; detailed lists of receipts for any itemized deductions and a blank check for direct deposit information. If you were provided with a 1095-A Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, please bring that as well.

BRCC institute offers Disney business course


The Disney Institute is bringing its highly regarded professional development course, Disney’s Approach to Business Excellence, to Blue Ridge Community College on May 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Sponsored by BRCC’s Professional Development Institute, the one-day event aims to help area professionals understand the power of leadership values, discover how customer loyalty can be established and gain insight into how organizational culture is strengthened.
Participants can apply tools to create systems and processes that make exceptional customer service achievable and learn how to integrate personal creativity and organizational processes to create ongoing innovation within their organization. This day of Disney training will offer time-tested Disney business insights that can help in assessing and improving an organization.
Registration for the event is $395 per person and includes all course materials as well as lunch and parking. Companies can register for a table of six and the sixth employee is free. The event will be held in Blue Ridge Conference Hall at BRCC.

Center for eating disorder holding open house Feb. 4

FLETCHER — Tapestry, a comprehensive eating disorder recovery center in Brevard and Fletcher, will hold an open house and ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at its new Adolescent Eating Disorder Recovery center in Fletcher.
The adolescent program, for males and females to ages 10 – 17, and focuses on recovery from the physical, social and psychological repercussions of having an eating disorder at a formative age. A highly trained staff will work with the youth according to their individual needs. This location will offer Partial Hospitalization Programs, structured Intensive Outpatient Programs and outpatient appointments.

Firefly Gallery holds trunk show


Firefly Craft Gallery, located in the Flat Rock Post Office building, is hosting its first trunk show, “Stone on Sterling” by Bill Cady, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
Cady will be on-site at the gallery showcasing his work and giving demonstrations. Champagne punch and chocolate will be served. Cady has been cabbing stones and working in silver since the mid-1980s. He studied silver fabrication in Jacksonville, Fla., and studied silver jewelry and casting at Haywood Community College in Clyde. He is a member of the Henderson County Gem and Mineral Society.
The gallery’s winter hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment.

Community Theatre honors top performers of ’15


Kimbela McMinn as lead actress in “Dreamgirls,” Hamilton Goodman as lead actor in “The Crucible,” Grace Trudeau as supporting actress in “Arsenic and Old Lace” and Ronnie Pepper as supporting actor in “Dreamgirls” won Barnie Awards when the Hendersonville Community Theatre celebrated its 2015 season on Jan. 17.
Minor Supporting Acting awards went to Kendra Perry for “Dreamgirls” and Henry Styron for “The 39 Steps” while the Junior Acting Award went to Sophia Prestol for “The Crucible.”
“The Miracle Worker” received the People’s Choice Award and “Dreamgirls” was voted Best Overall Production. Jonathan Forrester was named Outstanding Director for “Dreamgirls.” John Arnett received awards for Outstanding Set Design for “Dreamgirls” and Outstanding Lighting Design for “The Crucible.” Ann Huske and Doreen Blue were named Outstanding Costumers for “Arsenic and Old Lace” with Outstanding Sound Design going to Anette Hobbs for “The 39 Steps” and Outstanding Set Decoration and Props going to Kit Colfer and Linda Runion for “Arsenic and Old Lace.”
Awards for musical performances in “Dreamgirls” went to Kimbela McMinn as Female Soloist, Ronnie Pepper as Male Soloist and Blakeley Bristol as Solo Dancer. The Group Vocal Performance award went to Ronnie Pepper, Gaysha Snipes, Kimbela McMinn, Nikki Sampson and Brandon Gash.
