Clear Creek has some very bright spellers

Clear Creek Elementary School spellers made it through the Kiwanis Spelling Bee with no misspellings.

Clear Creek Elementary School achieved an unprecedented perfect score and held off Fletcher Elementary School in a spelloff at the 23rd annual Kiwanis Spelling Bee on Saturday, Feb. 20. Mills River finished third.


This year’s event was organized by the Kiwanis Service First Committee with Joel Franck and Chandra Burgher as co-chairs. The moderator was Sara Bagwell. Judges were Dr. Jim Kessaris, Darla Lindeman and Patti Baker. Word arbitrator was Lee Smith.
The Hendersonville Kiwanis Club and the Kiwanis Service First Committee thanked the schools and coaches that participated in the Spelling Bee. Schools and coaches were Atkinson Elementary, Lisa Dennison; Clear Creek Elementary, Carol Triplett/ Holly English; Dana Elementary, Lisa Roberts; Edneyville Elementary, Lena Robertson; Fletcher Elementary, Kristen Garrett; Veritas Christian Academy, Buffy Smith; Hendersonville Elementary, Susan Newman/Jody Maney; Hillandale Elementary, Whitney McLean; Mills River Elementary, Brittany Crisp; Sugarloaf Elementary, Kim Pettengill; and Upward Elementary Diane Norgan/Rebecca Blackwell.
Other supporters were Blue Ridge Community College, Bojangles, Vocational Solutions Print Center and McDonald’s.
