Cold front threatens fruit, cancels Musical Mile 5k

A cold front bringing lows this weekend in the low 30s and upper 20s threatens the young apple crop, grapes and strawberries — and it forced the cancellation of a 5k race on Saturday that was to be accompanied by woodwinds and brass instruments.

Thundershowers and wind gusts overnight were forecast as the cold front moves into the area. Forecasters called for rain on Thursday up until mid-afternoon. After that, it should be mostly sunny, with a high near 58.

The real cold comes Friday and Saturday nights, with overnight lows of 31 and then 28. The high Friday was expected to be 51. Saturday, although sunny, will see a high of just 45.

The forecast already claimed one casualty. Although the official National Weather Service forecast does not mention snow, the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra cited that possibility on Wednesday when it announced the cancellation of its Musical Mile 5k, which was set for Saturday morning. Set at the Park at Flat Rock, the race was scheduled to have live music along the course played by musicians from the HSO youth programs and professional orchestra.

“Due to the cold weather and the potential for snow, it would be impossible for our student and adult musicians to perform during the event,” said Eric Scheider, HSO orchestral manager and music director for the Youth Orchestras. “We were hoping for cooperative weather here in the spring. Our reschedule date will be later in the year (summer or early fall) during warmer weather, and we will let everyone know as soon as possible when we have a new date confirmed. We want to thank everyone who registered and supported the Musical Mile 5k and hope the community will come out for the rescheduled date.”

Those who had previously registered will be notified by April 6 about refunds.
