Expect delays from cleanup of fiery crash on I-40

A crash reported near Canton prompted the N.C. Department of Transportation to close all westbound lanes of I-40 West at the U.S. 23/74 Interchange at 3 a.m. today. Although the road reopened about sunrise delays were expected for a few more hours.

A collision and subsequent fire occurred between a tractor-trailer and a mini-van near Exit 27 just after 3 a.m. Monday. The accident happened when a van driving the wrong way on the interstate highway collided with the tractor-trailer, killing the can driver, WLOS-TV reported. Slowdowns were expected over the next few hours as cleanup from the accident continued, NCDOT reported shortly before 7 a.m.

NCDOT is also taking this time to remind the traveling public of the Move Over Law.

Under the "Move Over" law, motorists are required to move over one lane, if possible, or reduce speed for stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights on the shoulder of the highway, including public service vehicles with amber lights. Violating the law could result in a $500 fine.
