Muddy Sneakers honors Hillandale teacher

A fifth grade teacher at Hillandale Elementary School has been named Teacher of the Year by Muddy Sneakers — the organization that uses outdoor field trips to teach science.

Tara Hammond received the award Thursday at the school after Muddy Sneakers staff nominated and chose her. The organization said that she believes in the value of Environmental Education, is incredibly easy to communicate with, answers emails immediately, considers student behavior and personalities when making groups cares deeply for her students, buys students water bottles to ensure they are prepared, sends parents emails and calls to remind students to dress properly for the cold, especially when the expedition occurs on a Monday, ties the Muddy Sneakers experince back into her school day, and uses the experience as an extension of her teaching.
