Mills River eyes property purchase

MILLS RIVER — The Mills River Town Council is considering buying seven acres that would allow it to expand the town park.

At its May 26 meeting, the Town Council went into a closed session to discuss the three parcels, which total 6.6 acres and are valued at $364,400 for tax purposes. A 1.37-acre parcel, owned by Robert L. Driscoll, contains a 2,279-square-foot brick house valued at $203,100. Driscoll also owns an adjoining 1.94 acres. The other parcel, 3.3 acres on Hooper Lane, is owned by Coastal Express LLC.
Mayor Larry Freeman said he expects the Town Council to authorize an appraisal after meeting in closed session Thursday night. Councilman Roger Snyder said he’d be willing to look at a purchase.
“First of all, you’ve got to have a willing seller,” he said. The council has not decided how it would use the land and house. “We bounced a couple ideas around and around and around about making it at a later date some type of maintenance shed,” Snyder said.
