Mills River advances property purchase plan

MILLS RIVER — The Mills River Town Council is moving ahead with an appraisal that could lead to the purchase of a 3.3-acre parcel of land for park expansion.

“We asked the attorney to go ahead and look into getting the appraisal started,” Mayor Larry Freeman said. “That’s the state law. We just about have to get an appraisal.”
During a closed session in May the council discussed the possible acquisition of three parcels totaling 6.6 acres valued at $364,400 for tax purposes. The Coastal Express property on Hooper Lane is valued at $79,200 in tax records.
“Once we get the appraisal then we’ll see where we’re going,” Freeman said.
Councilman Roger Snyder said the council had been eyeing the land for some time.
“We’ve talked about it ever since we got the park up and going,” he said. “I’d like to put a maintenance shed on it, maybe a couple of offices and a bathroom. We’re getting filled up at Town Hall.”
