WNC Farmers Market wins grant for retail upgrade

The Western North Carolina Farmers Market has been awarded a $380,000 grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority to help pay for the renovation of the Market Shops building, a project designed to encourage more shoppers, particularly during winter months.

“The WNC Farmers Market has been a popular Asheville tourist site for nearly 40 years,” Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said in a news release. “With the support of the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, we will be able to make improvements so that the market can continue to be a destination for tourists and locals alike.”

The TDA awarded the grant from its Tourism Product Development Fund. The fund provides financial assistance for major tourism projects to substantially increase patronage of lodging facilities in Buncombe County. Renovation of the Market Shops is among the projects included in the farmers market’s master plan, released last year. The market is located at 570 Brevard Road.
