City puts protective roof on mill

The city of Hendersonville is putting a temporary protective roof on the Grey Hosiery Mill, not paying to reroof the 100-year-old building.

City crews n recent days began to install the temporary roof to prevent any further damage caused by the old roof, City Manager John Connet said. Some residents raised an eyebrown at the sight of the work, wondering why the city would spend any money on a building that it hopes to sell later this year. The roof is going over a part of the historic mill that the City Council hopes will be saved as part of a new hotel with meeting space and a restaurant. Cost of the work will be about $4,000, Connet said.

The City Council has sent out a request for proposals inviting developers to build a hotel on the site on Grove Street at Fourth Avenue East.
