BRCC theater students to star at MLK Unity Breakfast

Blue Ridge Community College has "gone young" in the lineup for the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 16. This year’s program, “A Time to Celebrate,” will feature Blue Ridge Community College theater students.

"What we’re basically going to have is a presentation by our drama students here on campus," said Gary Rivers, who coordinates the event. "They'll do eight vignettes on our local teens during the Sixties of that era."

Through songs, dance and spoken word, the program will look back on the civil rights era in Hendersonville. The program will also feature young dancers, instrumental music and two male singers in an a capella performance.

The breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the program to follow at 9:30 a.m. All events are open to the public and will be held at the Blue Ridge Conference Hall at BRCC.

Tickets may be purchased at the door or by contacting BRCC at (828) 694-1808. Tickets are $12 for adults ($5 tax deductible) and $6 for children ages 5-12. For more information contact Rivers at (828) 694-1808 or by email at garyr@blueridge.edu.

Proceeds support scholarships for BRCC students and over the years the MLK Jr. Unity Breakfast has funded 54 scholarships, Rviers said. The BRCC Education Foundation is still looking for sponsors.
