Repair job will close one lane of I-26 East Thursday

One lane of eastbound traffic on Interstate 26 will be closed for an emergency repair on Thursday night  just east of the I-26 rest area at mile marker 42 in Henderson County.

The Department of Transportation is coordinating with the Highway Patrol to close the lane in order for Harrison Construction to repair a 12-foot by 12-foot slab of concrete in the far right lane. An engineer noticed that part of this slab has begun to settle and fracture.

Without repair, it would likely deteriorate into a dangerous hole. Transportation officials are taking the opportunity to remove and replace the slab while temperatures remain warm enough for this type of concrete work.

The closure will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday and is expected to last until 6 a.m. One lane of traffic will remain open, however, significant delays are expected during times with heavy volumes of traffic.

An alternate route involves taking Airport Road west to Mills River, then N.C. 191 into Hendersonville, then U.S. 64 back to I-26 East. Another alternate route involves taking Airport road east to Hendersonville Road south which leads to I-26.
