County repaving Grove St. courthouse parking lot

Grove Street courthouse parking lot of closed this week for repaving.

Visitors to Henderson County's Grove Street Courthouse are having to walk a little farther this week.

Backhoes were digging up the asphalt and skid loaders filling dump trucks with slabs of pavement on Monday.

Tarheel Paving won a $79,000 contract to tear out the old asphalt and repave and restripe the parking lot, said facilities project coordinator Thad Ninneman. The old pavement was not worth salvaging.

"It's in really bad shape," he said. "We've patched it up several times over the years."

The Grove Street courthouse was built in 1995.

Visitors this week are using the lower runover lot off Fourth Avenue. The public entrance has been moved from the northside ground-floor door to the front doors of the courthouse.

The repaving was planned for this week because there's no court. The job is scheduled to be finished by this weekend, Ninneman said.
