A rising senior at North Henderson High School has been named the 2018 Apple Ambassador for Western North Carolina's largest summer festival, the North Carolina Apple Festival announced.
The ambassador is Alivia Breanna Nix, the daughter of Tammy and Brent Nix. As the Apple Ambassador, Nix will receive a $2,000 college scholarship.
The Apple Ambassador and Runner-up are awarded a Evelyn Lutz Hill Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship honors Ms. Hill, who served as the Secretary of the North Carolina Apple Growers for many years. She was serving as the president of the North Carolina Apple Festival, when she passed away in 2004. Runner-up is Sierra Dawn Lindsey, of East Henderson High School, the daughter of Tonya Lindsey. She receives a $1,000 college scholarship.
The Apple Ambassador represents the festival and at other events across the state that promote Henderson County and the apple industry. Each year, the festival selects an ambassador from local rising high school seniors. Applicants are required to submit their transcripts, list of activities and letters of recommendation and write an essay on the Apple Festival and the importance of the apple industry to the area. The Apple Ambassador is selected based on this information and through an interview process.
Other applicants were Emily Elizabeth Bowles - North Henderson High School; Sarah Abigail Erwin - East Henderson High School; Lauren Elizabeth McMurray - West Henderson High School; Shylee Alexis Stocks - West Henderson High School; Nichola Rae Jarvis - Hendersonville High School and Caitlin Dawn Conroy - Hendersonville High School .
