City doles out $99,794 to 27 nonprofits

The Hendersonville City Council approved $99,794 worth of appropriations to nonprofits involved in the arts, health and human services, education and tourism and business promotion during a final budget-drafting workshop on Friday.

 

As they have traditionally done, council members one by one announced their recommendation donations for each 33 organizations that had requested money in the past. The council zeroed out organizations that failed to make a request.

The council lowered the appropriation for the Flat Rock Playhouse, which pulled out of its South Main Street performance space last year, from $12,900 last year and the year before, to $3,000. The Playhouse had requested $25,000.
The five biggest appropriations were $17,500 for the Boys & Girls Club, $9,880 for Safelight, $7,700 for Interfaith Assistance Ministry, $6,400 for Blue Ridge Humane Society, and $5,780 for the Children & Family Resource Center.
Here are the appropriations, including last year’s appropriation, this year’s request and 2019-20 appropriation:
• Agribusiness Henderson County, AgHC: $5,000, $5,000, $5,000.

• Blue Ridge Education Foundation: $1,500, $13,250, $1,600.
• Blue Ridge Community Health Services: $3,920, $10,000, $4,100.
• Blue Ridge Humane Society: $8,000, $10,000, $6,400.
• Blue Ridge Literacy Council: $1580, $1,690, $1,520.
• Boys & Girls Club: $15,600, $20,000, $17,500.
• Children & Family Resource Center: $5,900, $10,000, $5,780.
• Flat Rock Playhouse: $12,900, $25,000, $3,000.
• Hands On! A Children’s Gallery: $3,500, $7,341, $4,100.
• Henderson County Council on Aging (Meals on Wheels): no 2018-19 appropriation, $5,000, $2,600.
• Henderson County NAACP: $910, $20,000, $1,082.
• Henderson County Young Leaders (Camplify): $1,220, $2,000, $1,484.
• Hendersonville Community Theatre: $2,600, $10,510, $2,500.
• Hendersonville Shuffleboard Club: $1,200, $1,200, $1,200.
