School Board OKs central office hire, new principals

The Henderson County School Board on Monday approved a central office appointment and two new principals for the 2019-2020 school year, effective July 1.

Jennifer Shelton has been named the new Director of Exceptional Children, filling the office vacated by Cathy Childress, who has been serving in an interim capacity following former director Lynn Metcalf’s departure in January 2019 to work for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. Shelton has served as Fletcher Elementary’s principal for the past nine years, and spent her entire education career in Henderson County. She joined HCPS in 2002 as a social studies teacher at East Henderson High and in 2007 moved to Hendersonville High, where she served as Assistant Principal until moving to Fletcher in 2010.

The principalship at Fletcher Elementary will be filled by Tammy Irish, currently assistant principal at Hendersonville High. Irish has spent the past two years at Hendersonville High, after serving as Assistant Principal at Rugby Middle for four years. Prior to her time in the county schools, Irish also served as Assistant Principal for Waynesville Middle School, after teaching in Western North Carolina middle schools for 10 years. During her education career, Irish has also served as an Athletic Director and School Improvement Team chairperson.

Currently Assistant Principal at Flat Rock Middle, Kelly Pratt has been named the new Principal at Hillandale Elementary, following current principal Jenny Moreno’s retirement at the end of this month. Pratt joined HCPS in 2003 as an Exceptional Children teacher and taught eight years at Hendersonville Middle, where she was also a Reading Facilitator. Beginning in 2011, Pratt spent two years teaching Exceptional Children at Apple Valley Middle, then moved to Flat Rock Middle where she served as a reading teacher until joining the administration as Assistant Principal in 2016. Prior to her time with HCPS, Pratt was an Exceptional Children teacher in Buncombe County Schools from 1995 to 2003.
