Schools on 3-hour delay as NWS warns of black ice

Henderson County schools are on a three-hour delay today as forecasters warned that potential black ice could create hazardous road conditions.

At 8 a.m. the school system extended the delay from two to three hours because "road conditions have not improved in several areas across the county." Recent rainfall contributed to slippery roadway conditions early Tuesday morning in areas that saw freezing temperatures overnight, the National Weather Service said.

"Use caution if driving overnight through Tuesday morning across the North Carolina mountains," NWS forecasters said. "Be on the lookout for black ice on area roadways. Allow extra travel time to reach your destination, and slow down while driving."

Things should improve steadily today, with a high of 49 under partly sunny skies. Highs remain in the mid 40s through the week with a slight chance of snow early Thursday and again Friday night before a real warmup. Highs should reach 52 on Sunday and 59 on Monday under sunny skies.
