Snow closes schools, postpones Chamber event

Henderson County public schools dismissed classes at 11 a.m. Friday after snowfall covered grassy areas and slickened roads.

Laurel Park officials warned that road conditions could become hazardous and the Chamber of Commerce postponed its annual awards winner until Friday, Feb. 6.

A high pressure system bringing cold air from New England combined with a low pressure system from the northern Gulf of Mexico created a heavier than expected snowfall across Henderson County, meteorologist Jeffrey Taylor of the National Weather Service office in Greer, South Carolina, said at 12:30 p.m.

"It should be tapering off here in the next hour and whatever's less is mostly rain," he said. "Higher elevations will get more than lower elevations as it typical but it shouldn't be much more — half an inch or less by the time it's over in next hour or two."

"Temperatures were just cold enough to generate some snow aloft even though surface temperatures have been above freezing," he added.

Saturday should be much warmer, with a high near 50 under gradually clearing skies. It gets better, with highs around 58 Sunday and 65 on Monday under sunny skies.
