Stang sworn in as chief public defender

Beth Stang, shown with her husband, Jon, was sworn in Monday as the new chief public defender for Judicial District 29B.

Beth W. Stang was sworn in as Henderson County's chief public defender on Monday.

Stang, who grew up in Mississippi, replaces Paul B. Welch III, who retired on Jan. 30 after serving as the chief public defender in the judicial district covering Polk, Transylvania and Henderson counties since 2007. Superior Court Judge Peter Knight administered the oath of office to Stang in the courtroom of District Court Judge Kim Gasperson Justice as her fellow attorneys looked on.

"She'll be the best public defender the office has ever had," Welch said.

Beth and her husband, Jon Stang, a clinical social worker, have two daughters, ages 6 and 3.
