City nears completion of Fourth Avenue streetscape makeover

City workers were putting the finishing touches on pedestrian walk signals last week as work was nearing completion on the Fourth Avenue East streetscape improvements.

The work included new pavement and sidewalks, brick paver crosswalks with pedestrian signals, decorative street lamps and a new traffic signal at Fourth Avenue and North Grove Street, which had been a four-way stop.

Cost of the work was around $350,000, with $91,000 funded by state Powell Bill money. The city’s work was part of an agreement with the buyer of the historic Grey Hosiery Mill to improve the street from the mill to Main Street and to the Historic Seventh Avenue District via Maple Street. The mill has been redeveloped as loft apartments, which are now being leased.
