A sheriff's deputy was shot and critically injured and a gunman killed when law officers returned fire early today during a call to a vehicle break-in off Piney Ridge Road in the Mountain Home community, the sheriff's office said.
At approximately 2:50 a.m. Henderson County communications received a call to 911 regarding a vehicle breaking and entering at 207 Bethea Drive. The original caller stated shots were being exchanged between the homeowner and suspects.
Deputies from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office responded.
Deputies located a suspect and vehicle in the area. Deputies were fired upon.
At approximately 3:04 a.m. a Henderson County deputy was struck by the suspect's gunfire and critically injured. Deputies returned fire and killed the shooter. The injured deputy was transported to Mission Hospital in critical condition.
Investigators from the State Bureau of investigation and Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit are on the scene.
The wounded deputy is "still in critical condition at the hospital," Maj. Frank Stout of the sheriff's office said at 8:30 a.m. "There's still a lot of moving fluid parts and as soon as we can share more we certainly want to."
Residents are asked to avoid the area of Piney Ridge and US 25 at this time. There is no threat to the public‘s safety at this time.
