Ian Adams, a 6-4 290-pound offensive lineman from Mills River who was part of Asheville Christ School's state championship football team this season, signed on Wednesday to play football for The Citadel.

Adams, who announced his commitment to Charleston, S.C., military school in April, will graduate this month from Christ School and take courses at Blue Ridge Community College before enrolling in college, said his father, Scott Adams. He signed with the Division 1 Bulldogs on the first day a formal commitment is permitted under NCAA rules. Ian is the son of Scott and Diana Adams and the grandson of Carol Adams, of Hendersonville, and the late Douglass Hammond Adams.

"He had a number of offers and opportunities," Scott said. "The offer from the Citadel was his first and it did not take him long to decide." A four-year starter at Christ School, Ian made the All-State team and helped the Greenies overcome years of near-misses in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association Division II championship game. The win over Harrells Christian was the first championship in 10 title game appearances for Christ School.

Ian's sister could follow her brother into college varsity athletics. Emma Elizabeth, 16, plays fullback on the soccer team of the Darlington School, a Rome, Georgia, boarding school. The soccer teams travels internationally and the school boasts 98 percent college scholarship rate for graduates, her father said.
