Curtis Marker

Curt Marker passed away on September 17, 2026, at 83 years young, leaving behind a legacy of love for his family, generosity toward others, and an enduring commitment to the students and schools of Henderson County.

After a 31-year career with Exxon Corporation, Curt and his wife, Susan, retired to Hendersonville, North Carolina, in 1998. He quickly fell in love with the town, its people, and the Champion Hills golf course.

After retiring to Hendersonville, Curt realized that he still wanted to be involved in work that offered both purpose and challenge. That search led him to the Henderson County Education Foundation (HCEF). Curt established the Marker Science Scholarship, which ultimately helped seven Henderson County students attend college for four years. Through this scholarship, he provided students with meaningful opportunities to pursue higher education and build their futures.

While serving HCEF in various ways, Curt discovered the Leader in Me program. He was especially inspired by its potential to reach students throughout Henderson County and make a lasting difference in their lives. Curt believed every child should have the opportunity to recognize their strengths, build confidence, learn to lead, and develop the life skills needed for the future. Seeing the potential for that kind of impact, he chose to devote his time, talent, and treasure to helping make Leader in Me available to students across the district.

In 2026, Curt was inducted into the Henderson County Education Foundation’s Hall of Fame in recognition of his dedication to the students of Henderson County. This honor reflected not only his generosity, but also the time, energy, and personal commitment he gave to helping young people. Through his many contributions to HCEF, Curt helped create opportunities that will continue to benefit students for years to come.

For 59 years, Curt and his wife, Susan, traveled through life together. They were blessed with a son, Bradley Jon Marker of San Francisco; a daughter, Sheri Lee Marker of Hendersonville; and a grandson, Matthew. Family was an important part of Curt’s life, and he treasured the years and memories they shared.

Curt was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed playing countless rounds of golf at Champion Hills. He never regretted retiring to this wonderful Carolina community.

Those wishing to honor Curt’s memory may consider making a donation to the Henderson County Education Foundation to help continue the work that meant so much to him.

There will be a celebration of life at Champion Hills on Sunday, November 8th, from 3-5 PM
