Capt. Chewie wants a forever home for Christmas

Captain Chewie, a 4-year-old large mixed breed male dog, has had a tough road on his way to what he hopes is his forever home.

Captain Chewie was found by Henderson County Animal Control in a ditch in the middle of the night. The dog was in very poor condition. He was very thin, had no hair, painful, bleeding skin and his extremely injured eye needed to removed quickly. Without immediate treatment it was doubtful Chewie would make it. Western Carolina Regional Animal Shelter stepped up and removed his eye and began caring for his injury and skin in house at no charge. Doctors could see Chewie was very loving despite his condition.
Chewie stayed with the staff at the hospital for more than a month until caregivers made a call to Blue Ridge Humane Society asking if the agency could take the pup in. Blue Ridge Humane staff went right away to meet the pup and were so impressed with how happy he was considering all he had been through.
The staff and volunteers at the shelter have quickly fallen in love with the lovable goof of a dog.

“We discovered quickly why he was named Captain Chewie when we heard him howling exactly like Chewbacca," said Crystal Tysz, Blue Ridge's training and behavior manager. "It was a really good impression. He also loves showing off his collection of PJs that we bought him to protect his skin. He just wiggles his body in happiness all the time."

Captain Chewie’s greatest wish is a home for the holidays. Blue Ridge Humane Society is offering to waive adoption fees through Dec. 23 to help make that Christmas wish come true for Captain Chewie and other animals waiting for adoption.
