HHS student attends Appalachian STEM program

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Linden Hunt, a Hendersonville High School from Saluda, was one of 18 students selected to attend the summer Appalachian STEM Academy Bridge Program, a two-week residential program focusing on advanced science, math and computer science projects.

The unique opportunity is open to students who previously completed the Appalachian STEM Academy middle school program and are current high school students but are not yet old enough to apply for the Appalachian STEM Academy high school program. The academy is sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Hunt conducted research at the University of Tennessee under the guidance of mentors at the university. Participants explored real-world applications of STEM concepts, collaborated with peers and conducted hands-on investigation. This year’s program was held July 11-24 and hosted by ORAU at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

The program is free to participants and open to high school students and high school teachers. It culminates in group presentations, during which participants share their research findings and project outcomes with peers, mentors and program leaders.

“The Appalachian STEM Academy is an exceptional program that identifies and nurtures future STEM leaders from across the 13-state Appalachian region,” said Jennifer Tyrell, associate manager at ORAU. “Through a rigorous application process, ARC selects students who show remarkable interest and talent in STEM fields. By connecting them with outstanding mentors and providing hands-on learning opportunities, we aim to inspire their enthusiasm and prepare them for successful careers in science, technology, engineering and math.”
