Hall’s horse ‘Jesse’ is viewers’ choice

Alec Hall’s pastel horse portrayal “Jesse” was voted Viewers’ Choice for the recently concluded Fall Member Show held at the Henderson County Library, the Art League announced during its annual Christmas luncheon.
Al Junek was named the 2019 Volunteer of the Year at the event for his dedication, involvement, and positive influence in promoting the League. Lynn Padgett was introduced as the incoming president and officers for year 2020 were installed.
For the coming year, Padgett announced a new arts education initiative and a new monthly meeting location, both to be held at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 900 Blythe Street. The education program will provide classes and workshops at various skill levels and across most media, intended for members and others in the public wanting to learn new skills in the arts. Meetings are held from 1:30- to 4 p.m., the second Sunday of each month, and include a demonstration or presentation related to the arts. Christmas tree recycling is scheduled for Jan. 11

MountainTrue will once again host its annual Christmas tree, Christmas card and tree lights recycling event at ballfield No. 6 at Jackson Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11.
Area residents are invited to bring their Christmas trees, wreaths, broken string lights and used greeting cards to be mulched and recycled. Trees, wreaths, lights and greeting cards should be brought on that day. Trees and wreaths should be stripped of all decorations and lights.
The mulcher has been provided by King Hardware & Rental and city of Hendersonville and Henderson County personnel will be on site to mulch the trees. Lights will be recycled by the Henderson County Cooperative Extension Service for a 4-H project. MountainTrue volunteers will be on hand to help and serve free cookies and hot apple cider. Free mulch will be available to those that want to take some home for your garden and landscaping.

Nominations invited for Catalyst Award

The Community Foundation of Henderson County is currently accepting nominations for the second annual Dot Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst Award.
Recipients of the award exemplify selfless volunteer leadership in philanthropic work for our community’s greater good, remaining engaged with commitment and determination to accomplish results that will help others and create a better future even beyond our lifetime. The recipient of the inaugural award was Renee Kumor.
“At the Foundation, Dot is often referred to as our ‘founding lady,’” says President/CEO McCray Benson. “She joined our organization at a pivotal time and it is our privilege to honor Dot’s tremendous legacy with this award.”
The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. Nominees for the award must be living residents of Henderson County. Committees, corporations and organizations are not eligible. Council on Aging seeks Meals on Wheels drivers

The Council on Aging of Henderson County, which provides and coordinates services to engage, connect, and support adults as they age, has an immediate need for Meals on Wheels volunteers to deliver meals, specifically for the following days of the week and locations:

• Monday: Asheville Highway 25 area.
• Tuesday: Hooper’s Creek Area and Green River area.
• Wednesday: Howard Gap Road area, Highway 64E area, Fruitland area, and Willow Road area
• Thursday: Fruitland area and Greenville Highway area
• Friday: Fruitland area, Kanuga Road area, and Howard Gap Road area.
Drivers for Meals on Wheels deliver a nutritious meal to frail, homebound adults all across Henderson County. Volunteers can choose to deliver a route as little as once per month or weekly if their schedule allows. To volunteer or learn more call (828) 692-6693.

Additional volunteer opportunities include:
• Thrift Store support: The Council on Aging operates thrift shops in Hendersonville and in Etowah. In both locations, volunteers serve as cashiers, salespeople and donation sorters. The thrift stores are open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
• Sammy Williams Center lunch site: Volunteers at the Sammy Williams Center interact with members by working in teams to serve meals, lead activities, and socialize in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. The Sammy Williams Center is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

ArtScape seeks artists, sponsors for 2020 exhibit

Artists and sponsors who want to participate in the 2020 ArtScape exhibit are invited to sign up now. The deadline for all applications – artists and sponsors – is Jan. 18.
A total of 40 artists will be chosen for the 2020 juried show, including four young artists. Artists must live in Henderson County. The young artists will be chosen in the age categories of 6 to 11 years and 12 to 17 years old. All other applicants must be 18 or older. The deadline for all applications is Jan. 18. Details are available at www.artscapehvl.org. Next year’s outdoor art gallery will be on exhibit in downtown Hendersonville from April 2020 to March 2021.
Sponsors for banners may also sign up now. Those wishing to sponsor one or more banners in the 2020 show will save on the cost of sponsorship by signing up before the end of the year. A banner can be sponsored for $200 through Dec. 31. From Jan. 1 to Jan. 18, the cost is $225. Sponsors can be individuals, businesses, or organizations. Sponsors’ names appear on the banners. Applications now open for 2020 scholarships

The Henderson County Education Foundation scholarship application portal is open for 2020 Henderson County graduating seniors. HCEF offers 26 scholarships totaling more than $45,000 in awards.
Through the generosity of its donors, the Education Foundation awards financial support to graduating seniors from Henderson County. New to the HCEF list of scholarships this year are the Ann Mullican Scholarship and the McMinn Leadership Award.
Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists are providing the $1,000 Ann Mullican Scholarship for a student attending a two-year or four-year university or college with plans to major in textiles or fiber arts.
The McMinn Leadership Award, started last year to honor the late Rev. Dr. James McMinn, supports two students with $500 scholarships.
In other updates, the Hendersonville Lions Club is now offering two $1,000 scholarships for students planning to major in the health care field, and the Community Tennis Association is increasing its awards to two $1,500 scholarships for students enrolled in public, private or home schools.
