Henderson County commissioners last week adopted a resolution of memoriam honoring Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist shot and killed at a campus appearance in Utah on Sept. 10, saying that he had “built his mission on the cornerstone … belief that political discourse is best when it is open, civil, and rooted in the First Amendment” and that exercising the right of free speech “should come without risk of death or injury.”
The board adopted the resolution during its regular meeting on Wednesday. Here is the resolution:
WHEREAS, On September 10, 2025, Charles James Kirk (“Charlie Kirk”) was publicly assassinated at Utah Valley University while speaking at an event; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk built his mission on the cornerstone of the belief that political discourse is best when it is open, civil, and rooted in the First Amendment; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk was dedicated to fostering an environment for open debate and dialogue on some of the toughest issues facing American politics; and
WHEREAS, The Henderson County Board of Commissioners proudly uphold the First Amendment and believe that exercising that right should come without risk of death or injury; and
WHEREAS, The United States of America was founded upon the universal truths that men are endowed with certain unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Charles James Kirk will be remembered for his dedication to pursuing open dialogue in a world of polarized politics. The Board of Commissioners reaffirms its commitment to the First Amendment and the rights of all Americans to peacefully assemble and to express their political views and opinions without fear of violence.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the County of Henderson to be affixed.
ADOPTED this 17th day of September 2025.
