Demonstrators at the Historic Courthouse on Tuesday urged U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis to vote against the "Big, Beautiful Bill," which they called "a sweeping assault on health that gives away billions to ICE and corporations and jeopardizes the state's hard-won Medicaid expansion program."
The Hendersonville protest was one of eight vigils across the state on Tuesday at the offices of Tillis and Sen. Ted Budd.
Demonstrators urged Tillis and Budd The "Our Health over Corporate Wealth" demonstration will "demand that he vote no on any cuts to health care and other essential benefits," a flier said. "The Big Bad Bill they are considering will cut taxes for corporations and the wealthiest in our country while putting everyone else in harm's way."
"We're proud to stand with others across the state to demand that our senators protect essential services like Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP," said Rachel Cohen, an organizer with Indivisible Asheville/WNC. "It is obscene that in the richest country on earth, we are making it harder for people who need it the most to get access to food and health care, all to give tax cuts to the wealthy, who need it the least. This is literally a fight for our lives, and we won't give up!"
The vigils were coordinated by the NC Justice Center, in partnership with local organizers across the state.
